Do you suffer from Watery Eyes?
Causes & Treatments for Watery Eyes
If your eyes are tearing constantly and you have no allergies and no cold you have watery eyes. Watery eyes are caused by excessive tear production and occur when there is too much tear production or improper drainage of the tear duct. In regular eyes tears flow under the eye lids and go down the nasal passages but if the eye drainage system becomes blocked then tears build up in the eyes until they spill over the eye lids.
Watery Eye Causes
What can cause watery eyes? The most common cause of watery eyes is actually dry eyes. Dry eyes get uncomfortable causing the eye to produce excessive tears. Other than dry eyes a lot of different things can cause watery eyes including:
- Tear Duct Blockage
- Eye Infections
- Irritations including environmental irritants like dust, smoke and wind
- Some medical conditions like Lupus
- Eye Injuries
Watery Eye Treatments
While excessive tearing is not an emergency it can be a nuisance if your eyes water constantly and you should visit your eye doctor. The eye doctor will perform tests to find the underlying cause of your watery eyes in order to properly treat them.
If the cause of your watery eyes is dry eyes then the doctor will treat the dry eye to lessen your tear production. If an infection is the cause of your watery eyes than your eye doctor is likely to prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection. If allergies are the cause of your watery eyes an antihistamine may help. While most causes of watery eyes can be easily treated, surgery may be needed if your watery eyes are caused by a drainage system obstruction.
