Pre and Post LASIK care

Most people who wear contacts or eyeglasses begin wearing them sometime in childhood. While they are grateful that there is something available to help them see well, dealing with glasses or contacts can get to be a hassle. Many decide in adulthood that they want to see without the aid of glasses or contacts. LASIK eye surgery makes this possible. If you believe you would benefit from LASIK, Family Vision Center is ready to assist you. Our optometrist will perform an eye exam to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure and will refer you to an appropriate practitioner.

Getting Your Eyes Ready for LASIK

Our optometrists will give you a thorough eye exam, ensuring that your eyes are healthy and free from conditions such as severe dry eye syndrome, conjunctivitis, or another infection or injury that would disqualify you from LASIK, such as glaucoma or cataracts. If you do have dry eye syndrome, you won't necessarily be disqualified. With proper pre-operative care, it is possible to get your eyes healthy enough for the procedure. At Family Vision Center, many can get proper treatment for their conditions and end up qualifying for LASIK after all.

Other aspects of your eye health that must be considered before LASIK include:

  • Cornea thickness: The procedure involves reshaping the cornea with a laser. Thin corneas, as with the condition keratoconus, may disqualify you from LASIK.
  • Correct pupil size: Those with large pupils sometimes experience night vision problems following surgery.
  • Stable vision: Many refractive errors are progressive during childhood and even out in early adulthood. If your vision stabilizes on its own, you may not need LASIK.
  • Not pregnant or nursing: Hormonal changes may affect cornea shape. Medications given before and after the operation may be risky for the baby.
  • Level of refractive error: If your prescription is very strong, you may not benefit from LASIK.

LASIK has a very high success rate and most can see with a visual acuity of 20/40 or better following the procedure. Some people however may develop dry eyes or night vision problems including the appearance of halos. Even though you no longer need corrective lenses, proper eye care remains important.
