How to Protect Your Eyes This Summer

The summer months are almost upon us and we are all looking forward to being outdoors. While dermatologists often use this time to remind their patients of the proper use of sunblock, optometrists have a similar message to share: protect your eyes!

Even on cloudy days, your eyes need protection to block out the sun’s harmful UV rays. Wearing sunglasses whenever you are outdoors, especially between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest, is your best bet.

Also, don’t forget your eyelid area when applying sunscreen. Many people overlook this critical region around the eyelids, which can be especially susceptible to certain skin cancers like squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. The eyelid and the corner of your eye closest to your nose have the thinnest layer of skin on your entire body and need this extra protection.

According to the American Optometry Association, overexposure to UV radiation can lead to sunburn in the eyes or eyelids and even skin cancer. More importantly, without proper eye protection, there is an increased risk for cataracts and glaucoma

Medications, such as sulfa drugs or antibiotics, can also increase your body’s sensitivity to UV radiation, making it even more important to use appropriate sunblock and wear close-fitting sunglasses frames to reduce the amount of sunlight reaching your eyes.

Summertime is fun time and we all want to sport the latest styles when it comes to selecting our sunglasses. However, by taking e a few moments to talk with your eye care professional about proper UV protection for your new shades will keep your eyes protected all year long.
