Seeing Beyond the Sunscreen: Protecting Children’s Eyes From the Summer Sun

Do you know how important it is to protect your child’s eyes during the upcoming summer months? Here at Family Vision Center, we’ve been busy working on the “FVC’s Eye Spy Fun in the Sun” initiative to make sure that you do.
A 2014 study by Essilor, creators of corrective lens designs, showed 3.2 million people go blind each year due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, and too much exposure to UV light in children increases the risk of them having eye diseases, including growths on the eye and cancer as adults. UV risk is the worst between 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., which is prime time for when children are outside at summer programs and camps. For that very reason, we are partnering with the Stratford Parks and Recreation Department to focus our community outreach efforts on educating parents and their children about protecting their eyesight while out in the sun for summer fun.

Our friends at the Stratford Parks and Recreation Department work tirelessly to provide quality, affordable recreational services to enable the entire community to utilize their leisure time, and to enhance their quality of life. One of their most popular summer programs is the Stratford Playground Program, which is held at the six town playgrounds (Honeyspot, Wilcoxson, Second Hill Lane, Clover, Eli Whitney and Short Beach) on weekdays from June 29 through August 13 from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Energetic and experienced program counselors engage the children in activities such as arts and crafts, sports and games.
During the first week of the Playground Program, the counselors will be distributing a fun “Eye Spy” game to each participating child. Every child who participates in the game will be entered in a drawing for a four-pack of Bridgeport Bluefish tickets! In addition, each child will receive a Family Vision Center cup along with educational materials for their parents on the importance of protecting their eyesight from harmful UV rays. Please help us spread this important message to help make our families’ summers more memorable, healthy and safe.
